Color swatches for every Shopify theme.

Shopify now has its own color swatches, but whether they show up, and where, depends on your theme. These guides cover 61 themes, from Horizon and Dawn to paid themes and the retired free themes some stores still run, and each one tells you which of three routes fits: the native setting, an app, or a code edit. Every theme fact here was checked on October 23, 2026, and each page lists its sources.

Three ways to add swatches.

  • Route 1

    Native swatches

Shopify's own swatches: you set the colors up once in the admin and your theme draws them. No app, no monthly fee and no extra script.

    Pick it when

    • Your theme is current and its Theme Store listing includes color swatches, as most do.
    • You sell plain colors, or a manageable number of patterns you can photograph.
    • You want swatches that keep working when you update or change themes.

    Skip it when

    • Your theme is a vintage theme such as Debut, Brooklyn or Supply.
    • You need swatches on collection cards and your theme has no card setting.
    • You sell each color as a separate product and want one picker across them.
  • Route 2

    A swatch app

A Shopify app draws swatches through an app embed you switch on in the theme editor. Shopify says app embeds work with any theme version.

    Pick it when

    • Your theme doesn't support native swatches, including every vintage theme.
    • You want swatches on collection product cards and your theme doesn't offer them.
    • You need extras: hiding sold-out colors, grouping separate products, or per-color photos.

    Skip it when

    • Your theme already does everything you need with native swatches.
    • Your collection pages are already slow and can't take another script.
    • You'd rather not add a monthly cost for something your theme does free.
  • Route 3

    Custom code

A developer edits your theme's Liquid files to print swatches, reading Shopify's swatch data or a list of color names.

    Pick it when

    • You run a vintage theme you can't leave yet and don't want an app.
    • A developer already maintains your theme and will keep the edits working.
    • You need a design that no setting or app offers.

    Skip it when

    • Your theme is current: an updated version arrives as a fresh copy without your edits.
    • Nobody will look after the code a year from now.
    • You haven't made a duplicate of the theme to work on.

How Shopify's native swatches work.

In plain terms, from Shopify's Help Center, shopify.dev and the Shopify Partners blog, checked October 23, 2026.

The colors live on your products, not in the theme

Native swatches start with a product category. Shopify's categories come from its Standard Product Taxonomy, and choosing one adds a set of attributes to the product, which Shopify calls category metafields. One of those attributes is Color.

When you link a variant option to the Color category metafield, the option's values come from color entries instead of free text. Each entry is reusable: edit it once in Content > Metaobjects and every product linked to it changes. Shopify's own example is renaming black to graphite across a whole catalog.

Already have products with a Color option? You don't have to rebuild them. Open the option, use the connect icon beside its name and pick the Color category metafield.

Which attributes can be swatches

Plain Color is the common one, but Shopify lists 55 color attributes that can carry swatches, including Band color, Dial color, Frame color, Lens color and Upholstery color. Pick a category that includes the attribute you need. Custom attributes aren't supported (Shopify Help Center, checked October 23, 2026).

A color, an image, or both

Each color entry can hold a hex value, an image, or both. Themes read them through Liquid's swatch object, which has a color and an image. Use images for stripes, prints, wood and other patterns.

Multicolor has no preset hex value, so give it an image. In collection filters, themes often show the image when an entry has both.

What your theme has to do

Shopify's data is only half the job: the theme has to draw it. In themes that support swatches, the variant picker block shows them by default once an option is linked, and Shopify's general steps offer Circle, Square or None as the display. Every theme names these settings a little differently, which is why each theme has its own page here.

  • Theme Store themes must support swatches on product options, showing either a hex color or an image.
  • Dawn has supported them since version 13 (Winter '24 Edition), and Shopify says category-based swatches need the latest Dawn.
  • Vintage themes, such as Debut and Brooklyn, need code edits or a Shopify Partner.

Collection pages and filters

Shopify's swatch help covers two places: the product page's variant picker and collection filters. Swatches on product cards in a collection grid are up to the theme, and the Theme Store rule covers product options only.

For filters, open the Search & Discovery app, add a Color filter with the type Category metafield, and turn on Include swatch (or Use images when available for patterns) under Manage values. The theme has to support Shopify's filter value API to draw them. Automatic grouping puts shades such as burgundy and ruby under Red, and Reorder for me sorts swatch values around the color wheel.

Limits worth knowing

  • Swatches only appear for options linked to a color category metafield.
  • A product can have up to three options and 2,048 variants.
  • Shopify's help pages disagree on whether category attributes work in Search & Discovery and Shopify Bundles. Filters work in Shopify's own swatch tutorial; treat Bundles as unsupported and test your filters.
  • A new category may not suit every sales channel, so check a published product's channels before you change its category.

Find your theme.

Every theme links to its swatch guide and to its profile with setting names and image sizes. Native swatches means Shopify's own swatches on the product page; product cards means swatches on collection grids.

Confirmed missing from the Theme Store on October 23, 2026. The November 2022 date comes from a Shopify Community reply that names Debut and counts eight others; the other eight are matched from archived Theme Store pages, since Shopify hasn't published a list. Pop and Jumpstart left earlier, in late 2019, also going by archived pages.

Color swatch questions.

Does Shopify have built-in color swatches?

Yes. Link a product's Color option to the Color category metafield that comes with its product category, and themes that support swatches show them in the variant picker. Most current Theme Store themes do; vintage themes need code or an app.

Do I need an app for color swatches on Shopify?

Not for the product page on most current themes. An app is worth it when your theme has no native support, when you want swatches on collection product cards and the theme doesn't offer them, or when you need extras like hiding sold-out colors.

Why don't my swatches show on collection pages?

Shopify's native swatches cover the product page and collection filters; product cards depend on the theme. Horizon, Impulse, Symmetry and others have a card setting, while Dawn has none. Check your theme's page here for the exact setting or the workaround.

Can I use pattern or image swatches instead of flat colors?

Yes. Upload a small square image to the color's entry in Content > Metaobjects, and themes that read swatch data show it instead of a flat color. Multicolor has no preset hex value, so it always needs an image.

Do native swatches work on retired themes like Debut?

Not without changes. Shopify's help says vintage themes need code edits or a Shopify Partner to show category-metafield swatches. An app that uses an app embed is the quicker route, and moving to Dawn or Horizon removes the problem.

Will swatches slow down my store?

Native hex swatches add almost nothing, since the theme draws them without an app script. Image swatches add one small file each, and apps add their own script. The swatch loading speed guide shows how to keep collection pages quick and how to measure them.
