Shopify fees

Shopify fees, explained in plain English.

What Shopify charges a store, one fee at a time: the plan price, card processing, the transaction fee on other providers, cards from abroad, currency conversion and refunds. Every number here was checked against Shopify's own pages on October 23, 2026.

How much does Shopify take per sale?

With Shopify Payments, Shopify takes the card rate and nothing else. For an online payment with a US card the rate falls as the plan goes up: on a $50.00 order it comes to

  • Basic 2.9% + 30¢ $1.75
  • Grow 2.7% + 30¢ $1.65
  • Advanced 2.5% + 30¢ $1.55
  • Plus 2.25% + 30¢ $1.43

With another payment provider, Shopify adds its own transaction fee instead: 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% of the order depending on the plan, on top of whatever that provider charges. The plan price is a separate monthly bill.

Plus is sold on a 1-year or 3-year term rather than monthly or yearly billing.

* Some visitors were shown $89 for Grow and $359 for Advanced on October 23, 2026, during a Shopify price test. The table shows the standard pricing page.

  • Basic plan

Basic is the lowest-priced Shopify plan open to new stores.

  • Grow plan

Grow is the plan Shopify used to call simply "Shopify".

  • Advanced plan

Advanced is the top self-serve plan below Plus.

  • Starter plan

Closed to new stores. What Starter stores can still do, and what replaces it.

Every Shopify fee, one at a time.

The plan price

A flat monthly charge on your Shopify bill. In the US it is $39 for Basic, $105 for Grow and $399 for Advanced on monthly billing, or $29, $79 and $299 a month when you pay for a year. Plus is sold on terms: $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, and Shopify says a variable platform fee may apply to larger stores.

On October 23, 2026 Shopify was testing its yearly prices: some visitors saw $89 for Grow and $359 for Advanced instead of the figures above, which are from its standard pricing page.

Card processing with Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments charges a percentage of the payment plus a small fixed amount, once per payment rather than per item. In the US that is 2.9% + 30¢ online on Basic, down to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, and 2.6% + 10¢ to 2.3% + 10¢ in person. Rates differ by country: in the UK Basic pays 2% + 25p, in Canada 2.8% + 30¢ and in Australia 1.7% + 30¢.

One assumption. Shopify does not say in words whether the card rate applies to shipping and tax as well as the products. Card processing normally covers the full amount charged, and the calculators here work it that way.

Shopify transaction fees on other payment providers

If a payment goes through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its third-party transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It is worked on the products less discounts, plus tax and shipping, and it is billed on your Shopify bill rather than taken from the payment. The provider's own fee comes on top.

So a $100.00 order through another provider on Basic pays Shopify $2.00, and at a typical 2.9% + 30¢ the provider takes another $3.20.

The fee is not charged on:

  • orders paid through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments
  • manual payment methods such as cash on delivery, bank deposits and draft orders marked as paid
  • point of sale orders
  • PayPal orders, when Shopify Payments is your main payment provider

One newer rule: stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay the transaction fee on the part of an order paid with store credit or a gift card, even when they use Shopify Payments.

If you run Shopify Payments next to another card provider, the payments Shopify Payments still handles (Shop Pay, local payment methods) cost its standard rate plus 1.25%, and cards taken by the other provider pay the transaction fee.

Cards from abroad and premium cards

In the US, a card issued in another country adds 1% to the plan's rate, so Basic's online rate becomes 3.9% + 30¢. US business, corporate and commercial cards and every American Express card pay a premium tier: 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.95% + 30¢ on Plus.

Other countries list a separate international rate that replaces the domestic one, for example 3.1% + 25p on Basic in the UK. In Ireland, Germany and France, cards from elsewhere in the European Economic Area count as domestic.

Currency conversion

When a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify Payments charges a conversion fee of 1.5% in the US and 2% in its other regions. Since April 6, 2026 it is worked on the full order amount. Shopify converts at the mid-market rate and adds no markup of its own; PayPal orders through Shopify Payments pay 3% instead.

Refunds

When you refund an order, Shopify keeps the original card fee, though it charges nothing extra for the refund itself. Nor are transaction fees, currency conversion fees or Shop Pay Installments fees returned. The refunded amount comes out of your next payout, or from your bank account if the payout is too small.

Take a $60.00 order on Basic with $7.00 of postage, refunded in full after delivery and put back in stock. You return the $60.00, Shopify keeps its $2.04 card fee, and the postage is gone: the order ends $9.04 down.

PayPal

A US store that uses Shopify Payments adds PayPal through Shopify Payments itself, at a rate Shopify lists as starting at 3.49% + 49¢, with no transaction fee. A store whose main provider is not Shopify Payments can connect its own PayPal account: PayPal's standard US rate for PayPal Checkout is 3.49% + 49¢ (PayPal's fee page, updated October 1, 2026), and Shopify adds its transaction fee on top.

Selling in person

In-person card payments through Shopify Payments cost 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic down to 2.3% + 10¢ on Plus in the US, and point of sale orders never pay the transaction fee. POS Pro is an add-on at $89 a month per location on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations; up to 200 with Shopify Payments.

Tax on Shopify's own fees

Shopify adds tax to its processing fees in the European Union, Australia, Switzerland and Singapore. In the UK, and in the EU outside Ireland, it applies a 0% reverse charge, so you account for the VAT yourself. Shopify's Irish rates are shown excluding VAT.

Shop Pay Installments

Stores in the US, Canada and the UK that use Shopify Payments and Shop Pay can offer it. Shopify does not publish the merchant rate on its public pages; it shows it in your admin, and says it already includes the normal processing fee. There is no transaction fee on these orders, and the fee is not returned on a refund.

Smaller charges worth knowing

  • Payouts to a bank account in another currency cost 1.5% on Advanced and 1% on Plus (1% and 0.75% for US stores).
  • On Plus, capturing a payment after the standard 7-day authorization period costs 1.75%.
  • Apps you install bill through Shopify on top of the plan, at whatever each app charges.

Starter, Retail and Agentic

Starter and Retail are closed to new stores; the Starter guide covers what we could confirm about them. Shopify also lists an Agentic plan with no monthly fee for selling through AI channels only, with the online store kept behind a password.

Shopify fee questions.

How much does Shopify take per sale?

With Shopify Payments, the card rate and nothing more. For an online payment with a US card that is 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, so a $50.00 order pays $1.75 on Basic. With another payment provider, Shopify charges its transaction fee instead (2% to 0.2% by plan) on top of that provider's fee.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees?

Only when another payment provider takes the payment: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Orders through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, manual payment methods and POS pay none, and neither do PayPal orders when Shopify Payments is your main provider.

Does Shopify charge fees on shipping and tax?

The transaction fee, yes: Shopify's own formula includes tax and shipping charges. For card fees Shopify does not say in words what amount the rate applies to. Card processing normally covers the full amount charged, and the calculators on this site assume the same.

Do I get Shopify fees back when I refund an order?

No. Shopify keeps the original card fee and charges nothing extra for the refund. Transaction fees, currency conversion fees and Shop Pay Installments fees are not returned either. A $60.00 order refunded in full on Basic still costs you its $2.04 card fee.

How much does Shopify cost a month?

In the US: Basic $39, Grow $105 and Advanced $399 a month on monthly billing, or $29, $79 and $299 a month billed yearly. Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term. Card fees and any app charges come on top.

Is there a free Shopify plan?

Shopify lists an Agentic plan with no monthly fee, but only for selling through AI channels: the online store stays password protected. For a normal store, the closest thing is the trial: on October 23, 2026 it was 3 days free, then $1 a month for the first 3 months.

Where these numbers come from.

Each figure on this page comes from Shopify's pricing pages for each country and its help center, plus PayPal's own fee page, all read on October 23, 2026. Shopify changes its prices from time to time, so the date matters as much as the number.
