Payment

Shopify Payments charges 1.5% of the full order in the US and 2% in the other countries here to convert it.

The order

Shopify's third-party transaction fee is charged on shipping and tax as well as the products. Card fees are worked out the same way here, on the full amount the customer pays; Shopify does not say this in words.

How it works.

  1. What the customer pays

Sale price times units, plus the shipping you charge. If your prices include tax, the tax is taken out of that total; if tax is added at checkout, it is added on top. Tax is worked on the items and shipping together.

  2. What Shopify and your provider take

With Shopify Payments, the plan's card rate on the whole amount the customer pays, with the fixed part charged once per order. With another provider, that provider's rate plus Shopify's third-party transaction fee (2% to 0.2% by plan). A customer paying in another currency adds Shopify's conversion fee. Each fee is rounded to the cent.

  3. What is left

Profit is what the customer paid, less tax, fees, the item cost, the shipping you pay and any other costs per order. Margin is profit as a share of the sale before tax. Markup compares the price before tax with the item cost.

  4. Break-even and the month

The break-even price is the lowest unit price that covers every cost and the fees that rise with the price. Add your orders per month and the plan price comes in too, with a break-even price that covers its share of each order.

Data and assumptions.

Rates verified
  • Plan prices and Shopify Payments rates are from Shopify's pricing page for each of the eight countries and from its help center, checked on October 23, 2026.
  • Card fees are worked on the full amount the customer pays, shipping and tax included. Shopify's transaction fee formula says so for that fee; for card fees Shopify does not say it in words.
  • Each fee is rounded to the cent, half up. Shopify does not publish its rounding, so a real payout can differ by a cent.
  • Yearly billing uses the price on Shopify's standard pricing page. During a price test on October 23, 2026 some visitors were shown $89 for Grow and $359 for Advanced instead.
  • Plus uses the 1-year term price ($2,500 a month in the US). A 3-year term is $2,300, and any variable platform fee is not included.
  • PayPal with your own account starts from PayPal's US rate for PayPal Checkout, 3.49% + 49¢. Outside the US that is only a starting estimate: enter your PayPal account's rate. PayPal through Shopify Payments uses Shopify's listed starting rate, 3.49% + 49¢.
  • Another provider starts from an example card rate. Replace it with your own.
  • In Australia Shopify adds GST to its fees; the calculator shows an estimate of it but leaves it out of profit, since a GST-registered seller usually claims it back.
  • Shopify Payments is not offered in India, so Indian stores use another provider and pay the transaction fee.
  • Not included: app charges, chargeback fees, Shop Pay Installments (Shopify does not publish its rate), payout fees and tax on your Shopify bill.

Questions about the calculator.

How do I work out my Shopify profit margin?

Start with what the customer pays, take off any sales tax, then Shopify's fees, the item cost, the shipping you pay and any other costs. What is left is profit. Divide it by the sale before tax and you have the margin. The calculator above does each step for one order, on every plan at once.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the sale. Markup is how far the price sits above what the item cost you. A $50.00 item that costs $15.00 has a 233.3% markup, but after a $1.75 card fee and $6.00 of postage its margin is 54.5%.

What fees does Shopify take from each order?

With Shopify Payments, the card rate: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus for an online US card payment. With another provider, Shopify's third-party transaction fee of 2% to 0.2% on top of that provider's fee. A customer paying in another currency adds a conversion fee of 1.5% in the US.

Does the calculator include the monthly plan price?

Add your orders per month and it does: the month block adds the plan price on the billing you chose, shows the plan price per order, and gives a break-even price that covers it.

Are Shopify fees charged on shipping?

Shopify's third-party transaction fee is, by its own formula, which includes tax and shipping charges. For card fees Shopify does not say in words; card processing normally covers the full amount charged, and this calculator works it that way, so charging shipping at cost still costs you the card rate on it.

How current are the rates?

Every plan price and rate was checked against Shopify's own pages on October 23, 2026. The date sits next to the calculator, and the sources are listed below it.
