Shopify image sizes

Shopify image sizes, from Shopify's own pages.

Shopify publishes a few firm numbers, a lot of advice that depends on your theme, and two figures that disagree. Here is each one with where it comes from, the sizes theme vendors give, and a checker for your files.

  • Shopify blog only: Shopify's general advice for websites, not a setting or a limit.
  • Dawn's theme code: what Shopify's own free theme asks for.
  • Shopify's pages disagree: two Shopify pages give different numbers.

    • Product images: Shopify's 2048 x 2048 px for square photos applies to Dawn and the Horizon themes alike.
    • Image banner and slideshow: Dawn requests files from 375 to 3840 px wide, across the full screen width.
    • Slideshow height: adapt image, small, medium, large; "adapt" takes the first slide's shape.
    • Logo: a width setting from 50 to 300 px, starting at 100 px, with the file requested at up to twice the width.
    • Favicon: "Displayed at 32 x 32px", in Theme settings under Logo.
    • Blog post image: requested up to 3000 px wide on the article page.

    Symmetry, Showcase, Envy and Capital publish no fixed pixel sizes; their vendors say to upload the largest image you have, or give ratios only.

    No image size documentation found for Masonry, Broadcast, Be Yours and Kalles.

    Some vendor pages are older than the current theme version; the notes on each guide page say so where the data shows it.

    Which format, where.

    • Product images: PNG, then JPEG are best; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, WebP also work.
    • Theme images: JPEG for products, banners or slideshows, pages and blog posts; PNG for logos, icons, borders and trims.
    • Collection images: no WebP, even though products and Files take it.
    • Files page: JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and GIF, under 20 MB and 25 MP, between 100:1 and 1:100.
    • Color: Shopify removes embedded color profiles and browsers assume sRGB, so export in sRGB.

    What size images does Shopify recommend?

    Shopify's Help Center gives a few firm numbers: 2048 x 2048 px for square product images, a logo shown up to 300 px wide and a 32 x 32 px favicon. For banners, slideshows and collection images it gives no size, because the theme decides the shape.

    What is the largest image Shopify accepts?

    Product and collection images can be up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP, under 20 MB. Shopify's theme images page says 20 MP for images uploaded in the theme editor, so Shopify's pages disagree; stay under the lower one, 20 MP.

    Does Shopify resize my images?

    Yes. Shopify makes smaller copies of each image automatically and the theme asks for the size it needs. It serves up to 5760 px wide or tall and never makes an image larger than the original, so upload at least as large as the biggest size your theme shows.

    Do I need to compress images before uploading?

    No, says Shopify: upload the best quality you can. Images aren't compressed at admin upload; they may be compressed when served through the theme, and the best format is chosen automatically. For speed, Shopify's blog suggests up to 2 MB, around 500 KB in most cases.

    Why do my colors look different on the storefront?

    Shopify removes embedded color profiles when it shows an image, and browsers then assume sRGB. Export images in sRGB before uploading so what you see in your editor is what customers see.

    Which image format should I use on Shopify?

    PNG or JPEG for product images, PNG first. JPEG for banners, slideshows and blog posts; PNG for logos and icons. WebP works for products and theme images but not for collection images.
