Shopify image sizes
Shopify product image size.
For square product photos, Shopify says 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best. Here is what else Shopify, its free themes and the paid theme vendors say, with a checker for your own files.
The short answer.
Use 2048 x 2048 px for square product images, the size Shopify's Help Center says usually displays best. Shopify does not require square photos, but every main product image should share one ratio so collection grids line up. Files can go up to 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP and must be under 20 MB.
For zoom, Shopify's blog says images need to be more than 800 x 800 px. That figure is not in the Help Center.
| Best size for square images | 2048 x 2048 px Shopify Help Center |
|---|---|
| Shape | Any, the same for every main image Shopify Help Center |
| Largest file Shopify takes | 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP, under 20 MB Shopify Help Center |
| Zoom | More than 800 x 800 px Shopify blog only |
| Best formats | PNG, then JPEG; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, WebP also work Shopify Help Center |
| Images per product | Up to 250, counting videos and 3D models Shopify Help Center |
| Shapes Shopify accepts | Between 100:1 and 1:100 Shopify Help Center |

Dawn and Shopify's free themes.
Shopify's free themes, Dawn and the Horizon family included, publish no product image size of their own, so Shopify's general figure is the one to use: 2048 x 2048 px for square photos. Each free theme lays the photos out its own way, so pick one ratio and keep to it.
What theme vendors publish.
Each size as the vendor's own documentation gives it, checked October 23, 2026. Themes change between versions, so check yours against its documentation too.

Getting it right.
-
Pick one ratio and keep it
Square is the safe default. Portrait (3:4 or 4:5) shows more of clothing and suits themes that recommend it. Mixing ratios is what makes a collection grid look ragged.
-
Crop, do not stretch
Shopify's media editor crops to a new ratio; resizing with the ratio unlocked distorts the photo. Crop before you upload to control what stays in frame.
-
Upload the best copy you have
Upload the best quality you can. Images aren't compressed at admin upload; they may be compressed when served through the theme, and the best format is chosen automatically.
-
Name files plainly
Shopify warns against file names ending in words such as pico, icon, thumb, testing or small: Shopify's image service can misread these endings as resize requests; Shopify appends a suffix automatically.
Product image size questions.
What size should Shopify product images be?
2048 x 2048 px for square images, which Shopify's Help Center says usually displays best. Any ratio is allowed as long as your main images match, and the limit is 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP, under 20 MB.
What is the minimum size for product zoom?
Shopify's blog says more than 800 x 800 px. The Help Center gives no zoom minimum, so treat 800 px as a floor and upload larger where you can.
Should product photos be square or portrait?
Shopify allows either. What matters is that every main product image uses the same ratio. Some paid themes recommend portrait: Impulse, Motion, Expanse and Streamline suggest 1065 x 1420 px, and Icon 1500 x 2000 px, both 3:4. The table above lists each vendor's size.
Does Shopify compress product images?
Shopify's help says images are not compressed when you upload them in the admin, and may be compressed when the theme serves them, with the best format chosen automatically. You do not need to compress them first; keep each file under 20 MB.
Which file format is best for product images?
PNG, then JPEG, says Shopify. TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, WebP are accepted as well, and GIF and WebP can be animated.
How many images can a product have?
Up to 250 media items, which includes videos and 3D models. Each variant can show one of the product's images.
