Shopify image sizes

Shopify banner size.

Shopify does not publish one banner size, because each theme section sets its own shape. Dawn asks for files up to 3840 px wide. Here is that figure, the Shopify blog's and every theme vendor's own.

Checked against Shopify's pages

The short answer.

There is no single Shopify banner size. The Help Center says the section decides the image area's shape and crops an image with a different ratio, and points you to your theme's documentation. For Shopify's own Dawn theme, a full-width image banner or slideshow requests files up to 3840 px wide, so an image that wide covers the largest screens.

Shopify's blog, writing about websites in general, suggests banners about 1920 px wide and gives 1200 x 400 (3:1) for a banner strip. Those are general web figures, not theme settings.

Dawn and Shopify's free themes.

Dawn's image banner requests the file at widths from 375 to 3840 px and shows it across the full screen width, or half of it when two images sit side by side on desktop. Its height comes from the section's setting: adapt to the image, small, medium or large. The Horizon themes have a focal point setting, as Dawn does from version 7.0.0, which keeps the part you choose in frame when the section crops.

What theme vendors publish.

Each size as the vendor's own documentation gives it, checked October 23, 2026. Themes change between versions, so check yours against its documentation too.

Getting it right.

  1. Keep text out of the picture

Shopify's help advises against text inside banner and slideshow images. Add the headline in the theme editor, where it stays sharp, reads on phones and can be changed without a new image.

  2. Set a focal point

The section crops to its own shape, and differently on phones. A focal point keeps the subject in view; without one, keep it near the middle.

  3. Match the height setting

Many free themes offer "Adapt to image", which sizes the section to your picture's ratio. With a fixed height, expect the top and bottom or the sides to be cut.

  4. Export once, at full width

A 3840 px wide JPEG covers Dawn's largest request. Shopify makes the smaller copies itself and never enlarges an image, so a narrow file stays soft on a big screen.
