Shopify image sizes

Shopify collection image size.

Shopify sets no size for collection images, so the theme decides: a banner across the top of the collection page, a tile in a collection list, or both. Here is each theme's figure and the one format to avoid.

The short answer.

Shopify's help gives no recommended size for collection images. They share the product image limits, 25 MP and under 20 MB, and one rule of their own: collection images do not accept WebP, even though product images and Files do.

How the image is used depends on your theme. Some show it as a wide header on the collection page, others as a tile in a collection list, so check the vendor's size in the table below.

    Dawn and Shopify's free themes.

    Shopify's free themes publish no collection image size. In Dawn the collection image appears in the collection banner and in collection list sections, cropped to each section's shape, so a large landscape image with the subject in the middle covers both.

    Symmetry, Showcase, Envy and Capital publish no fixed pixel sizes: their vendors say to upload the largest image you have, or give ratios only.

    Getting it right.

    1. Save as JPEG or PNG

      A WebP file is refused for a collection image. Convert it first; the checker above can make the JPEG for you.

    2. Know where it shows

      Look at your collection page and any collection list on the home page. A wide header and a square tile crop the same image in very different ways.

    3. Keep the subject central

      When one image has to fill both a banner and a tile, put what matters in the middle so both crops keep it.

    4. Match your other collections

      Collection tiles sit side by side. Images with the same ratio and similar framing make the list look planned.

    Collection image size questions.

    What size should a Shopify collection image be?

    Shopify gives no size, so use your theme's: for example 2400 x 900 px for the collection banner in Prestige, Impact, Focal and Warehouse, or 2880 x 1620 px for Impulse's collection header. The limits are 25 MP and under 20 MB.

    Why will Shopify not take my WebP collection image?

    Collection images do not support WebP, according to Shopify's add-media troubleshooting page, even though product images and Files do. Save the image as JPEG or PNG.

    Is the collection image the same as the collection banner?

    In many themes, yes: the image you set on the collection becomes the banner at the top of its page and the tile in collection lists. Some themes let you set a separate image in the section instead.

    Should collection images be square?

    For tiles in a collection list, square or the same ratio as your product images looks tidy. For a page header, a wide image works better. If one image does both, crop with the subject in the middle.
