Shopify image sizes

Shopify slideshow image size.

A slideshow takes its shape from one setting, and in many themes from its first slide. Make every slide the same size, wide enough for the largest screen, and check your theme's own figure below.

The short answer.

Make every slide the same dimensions, at the width your theme asks for. Shopify's help notes that many free themes size a slideshow to its first slide when the height is set to adapt, so a slide with a different ratio gets cropped or leaves a gap. In Dawn the slideshow requests files up to 3840 px wide.

Shopify itself gives no slideshow pixel size. Theme vendors do: the table below lists each one we found.

    Dawn and Shopify's free themes.

Dawn's slideshow has four height settings (adapt image, small, medium, large). "Adapt" sizes the whole slideshow to the first slide's ratio, which is why the rest should match it. Like the image banner, it requests files up to 3840 px wide.

    What theme vendors publish.

Each size as the vendor's own documentation gives it, checked October 23, 2026. Themes change between versions, so check yours against its documentation too.

    Getting it right.

    1. Crop every slide from the same frame

Export all slides from one canvas size in your editor, so they share both the width and the ratio. A slideshow that jumps in height from slide to slide looks broken.

    2. Plan for phones

On a phone the slide is often cropped to a squarer shape. Keep the subject in the middle third, or use the theme's separate phone image if it has one.

    3. Fewer slides, faster page

Each slide is another large file. Two or three strong slides load faster than six, and the first one carries most of the weight.

    4. Text goes in the editor

Write the headline and button in the slide's settings rather than in the picture, so it reads on every screen size.

    Slideshow image size questions.

What size should Shopify slideshow images be?

The size your theme documents, the same for every slide. For Dawn, 3840 px wide covers its largest request. Paid themes give their own sizes, from 1600 x 1000 px (Turbo and Flex) to 2880 x 1620 px (Impulse and Icon).

Do all slides need to be the same size?

Yes, in practice. A slideshow has one height, often set by the first slide, so a slide with another ratio is cropped or shows bars. Style Hatch and Clean Canvas both tell their customers to keep slides identical in size.

What does "adapt to first image" do?

It makes the slideshow the shape of its first slide. Shopify's help describes it for many free themes. Every later slide is shown in that same shape, so make them all match.

What size are slideshow images on phones?

It depends on the theme. Some crop the desktop slide; others take a separate phone image, such as Impulse at 800 x 800 px or Empire at 600 x 600 px for its medium height.
