Shopify image sizes

Shopify favicon size.

Shopify recommends a 32 x 32 px favicon, the small icon in the browser tab. A larger image is scaled down to 32 x 32 px, so a sharp square PNG is all you need.

Checked against Shopify's pages

The short answer.

Use a 32 x 32 px square image. Shopify's theme settings help recommends 32 x 32 px and says larger images are scaled down to 32 x 32 px; its favicon page calls 16 x 16 or 32 x 32 px ideal. Dawn's setting says the same: displayed at 32 x 32 px.

Shopify's blog gives 48 x 48 px for websites in general. For a Shopify store, go with the Help Center's 32 x 32.

    Dawn and Shopify's free themes.

Dawn's favicon setting sits in Theme settings, under Logo, and its own help text reads "Displayed at 32 x 32px". The other free themes use the same Theme settings panel.

    Getting it right.

    1. Start from a square

A favicon shows as a square. A wide logo squeezed into one is unreadable, so use the mark, an initial or a simple shape.

    2. Design for 16 px

Tabs often show the icon even smaller than 32 px. Thick shapes and one or two colors survive; thin lines and small text do not.

    3. Use a PNG

Shopify suggests PNG for icons, and a transparent background lets the icon sit cleanly in light and dark browser tabs.

    4. Check your plan

Favicons need the Basic plan or higher (or the Agentic plan when building an online store). On the Starter plan the setting is not there.

    Favicon size questions.

What size should a Shopify favicon be?

32 x 32 px. Shopify's Help Center recommends it, scales larger images down to it, and Dawn displays the favicon at that size.

Can I upload a bigger favicon?

Yes. Shopify scales it down to 32 x 32 px. A larger square is fine as long as it still reads at that size.

Why can I not add a favicon to my store?

Favicons need the Basic plan or higher (or the Agentic plan when building an online store). The Starter plan does not have the setting.

    Is a favicon 32 x 32 or 48 x 48?

For a Shopify store, 32 x 32 px, from the Help Center. Shopify's blog gives 48 x 48 px for websites in general, which is the one figure on Shopify's pages that disagrees.
