The kind of image and the theme you pick are written into the page address, so a shared link opens the same check. The images themselves stay in this page.

    How the checker works.

    1. Choose what the image is for

A product photo, a collection image, a slideshow or banner, a logo, a favicon or a blog post image. Each has its own advice from Shopify, and the checker tests against that one.

    2. Add your theme

Pick it from the list to add the sizes its vendor documents. 61 themes are listed; where a vendor publishes no size for that kind of image, the checker says so instead of guessing.

    3. Drop the images in

For each one you get the pixel size, shape, megapixels, file size, format and whether it has transparent pixels, then a check against Shopify's limits (20 to 25 MP and 20 MB) and the advice for its role.

    4. Resize what does not fit

Open "Resize to fit", set the largest width and height, pick JPEG, PNG or WebP and the quality, and the checker makes the copy and tells you its size before you download it. It never makes an image larger than it is.

Sizes for each kind of image.

One guide per spot in your store, each with the checker set to that kind of image, Shopify's numbers, Dawn's and every theme vendor's.

    Data and assumptions.

    Checked
    • Shopify's limits and advice were read from its Help Center, shopify.dev, its blog and Dawn's code on October 23, 2026.
    • Theme sizes come from each vendor's own documentation for 23 of the 61 themes in the list; the rest publish none, and the checker says so.
    • Megapixels are width times height divided by a million, as Shopify defines them.
    • Transparency is read from the pixels on a small copy of the image; a PNG with no alpha channel is reported as having none without a scan.
    • The size shown is the one the browser opens, with any camera rotation applied.
    • The logo's 600 px upload width is worked out from Dawn's code, which asks for twice the display width; Shopify does not state it.
    • Shape checks allow a few percent either way, since a crop by hand is rarely exact.

    Questions about the checker.

    Are my images uploaded?

The checker reads and resizes each image in this page with your browser; the image files are not sent to our server. Closing or reloading the page clears them.

What image sizes does Shopify recommend?

2048 x 2048 px for square product images, a 32 x 32 px favicon and a logo shown up to 300 px wide. Banners, slideshows and collection images have no Shopify size, because the theme section sets the shape. The image sizes guide lists every figure with its source.

What does "Shopify's pages disagree" mean?

Shopify's theme images page gives a 20 MP limit, while its product media and Files pages say 25 MP. The checker passes an image under 20 MP, warns between the two, and fails it above 25 MP.

Why are some sizes marked "Shopify blog only"?

Some numbers, such as the zoom minimum and the hero image size, appear only in Shopify's blog, as general advice for websites. They are useful starting points but they are not limits or theme settings, so the checker treats them as advice.

Can the checker read HEIC or TIFF photos?

It reads the file type and size of any file. Whether it can open a HEIC or TIFF photo to measure its pixels depends on your browser; Safari opens HEIC, most others do not. Shopify accepts both, and converts TIFF to JPEG or PNG on upload.

    Does resizing change the quality?

Making an image smaller keeps it sharp; the checker shrinks large images in steps for a cleaner result. JPEG and WebP copies use the quality you set, and a JPEG gets a white background where the original was transparent.

    Making swatch images too?

Turn hex codes or a product photo into a matching set of swatches, with the values Shopify's own swatches read.
